About Timothy Philpott's case

50-year-old Timothy Philpott was last seen in Ellsworth, Maine at 7:45a on January 12, 2016. On January 13, 2016, at approximately 9a, Philpott’s car was located at the Parkman Mountain parking area located off ME 198 in Mount Desert. NPS personnel noticed that his vehicle had been at the parking lot since the day before, which led park rangers to do an immediate search in the surrounding areas, but Philpott was nowhere to be found, and he was unreachable by phone.

On January 14, 2016 the NPS organized search efforts with MDI Search and Rescue volunteers, and Maine Warden Service (providing airplane search tactics) along the trails surrounding Parkman and Sargent mountains. The search got suspended to the following day due to nightfall.

On Friday, January 15, 2016, the NPS, along with the Maine Warden Service and several search dog teams, expanded their search efforts, but Philpott was not found.

On January 16, 2016, search efforts continued, but got suspended due to heavy snowfall. Search efforts were continued when weather conditions were safe enough to operate under.

On April 15, 2016, search dogs from the Maine Search and Rescue alerted searchers of a backpack found 40 feet from a carriage road, on the northwest side of Parkman Mountain. About three hours later a search dog found remains that were about 170 feet downslope from where the backpack was found.

The remains were identified as Timothy Philpott on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. The cause of death has not been determined, and is under investigation.
