About Martin Edward O'Connor's case

Martin O’Connor was last seen, and reported missing on December 22, 2019. He was last seen at the Yavapai Lodge, where he was staying.

A few weeks prior to his disappearance, weather conditions dropped below freezing , with an inch of snow fall on December 18, 2019.

After 11 days of going missing, a group of hikers spotted O’Connor along the New Hance Trail on the Sothern Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park on January 1, 2020. After the hikers reported O’Connor’s whereabouts to the park rangers, a helicopter was flown out the next day to the New Hance Trail where O’Connor was spotted, and picked up.

O’Connor went through a medical evaluation and was able to be reunited with his family.

New Hance Trail Background: The New Hance Trail is considered to be one of the most difficult trails on the Southern Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Northern Rim of the park is at least 1,000 feet above sea level higher than the Southern Rim. While the Northern Rim remains open year-around, the Southern Rim is closed during the winter months.
