Matthew Bunker was reported missing on June 26, 2020 at 3p on Liberty Ridge by a member of his climbing party. Moments before his disappearance, Bunker was skiing behind his partner, near Thumb Rock, and due to unknown reasons, fell in steep, treacherous terrain.
The search for Bunker included the use of the National Park Service's A-Star B3 helicopter, carrying Mount Rainier National Park climbing rangers. Bunker's body was found on June 29, 2020 in a crevasse at a base of a cliff. Due to the poor integrity of the cliff's rock walls, the risk was too high for both ground and aviation rescue personnel to attempt retrieving Bunker's body.
