Gregory Muck planned to hike Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks on August 10, 2014 and return home on August 17. Muck planned to hike from the Road's End area of Kings Canyon, hiking along Gardiner Basin via Gardiner Pass. Afterwards, he had planned to hike from Gardiner Creek to Woods Creek, and return to the Road's End area in Cedar Grove by August 17. However, when he failed to return home on August 18, his wife reported him missing.
On August 20, 2014, Muck's body was found 12,000 feet in elevation northwest of Mount Gardiner. Park officials reported that he died from a fall.
